Our grinding workshop is equipped with a center hole grinding machine, also known as a center grinder, for preparing and restoring the center holes of shaft-type components before precision cylindrical grinding.
The machine is mainly used to improve the geometry, surface condition, and positional consistency of center holes. Since these holes often serve as the locating datum when a shaft is machined between centers, their condition can directly affect the concentricity, roundness, and dimensional stability of subsequent grinding operations.
Center hole grinding is completed within our factory and coordinated with cylindrical grinding, dimensional inspection, and other finishing processes.
Key Advantages:
- Improved datum accuracy
- Better shaft concentricity
- Stable grinding positioning
- Reduced runout variation
- Consistent repeat production
Equipment and Production Capabilities
The center hole grinding machine is primarily used for shaft components that require accurate rotational positioning. It can refine worn, uneven, or insufficiently finished center holes and establish a more reliable reference surface for the next machining stage.
During processing, the shaft component is held securely while the grinding unit finishes the internal surface of the center hole. The process helps correct local irregularities and provides more uniform contact between the center hole and the machine center.
Typical components processed with this equipment include:
- Precision shafts and spindles
- Motor shafts
- Transmission shafts
- Guide posts and guide pins
- Mold cores and ejector components
- Tooling shafts and rotating parts
- Long cylindrical components requiring low runout
The equipment is particularly useful before external cylindrical grinding. When a workpiece is supported between centers, the accuracy of the center holes determines how consistently the part rotates around its intended axis. Proper center hole preparation helps reduce datum deviation and supports more reliable control of diameter, roundness, cylindricity, and coaxiality.
Role in Our Grinding Process
In our factory, center hole grinding is used as a supporting precision process rather than an isolated operation. It is arranged according to the component geometry, material condition, tolerance requirements, and subsequent grinding sequence.
The general workflow may include:
- Initial turning or rough machining
- Heat treatment, when required
- Center hole inspection and grinding
- External cylindrical or precision shaft grinding
- Runout and dimensional inspection
By completing center hole preparation and cylindrical grinding within the same production workflow, our technicians can coordinate locating references, machining allowance, grinding parameters, and inspection standards more directly.
This equipment is especially important for parts that undergo several grinding stages or require repeated positioning between centers. A stable center-hole datum helps maintain alignment across different operations and reduces variation caused by inaccurate or damaged locating surfaces.
The machine shown is part of our factory’s precision grinding equipment. Its actual processing method is selected according to the shaft size, center-hole geometry, material, heat-treatment condition, and drawing tolerances of each comp
