Mold Trial And Inspection Help Prepare For Stable Mass Production
YIZE
Established in 2007, Dongguan Yize Mold Co., Ltd. is a technology-driven, comprehensive manufacturing enterprise integrating the R&D, design, and fabrication of precision molds with injection molding services. Since its inception, Yize Mold has consistently adhered to the philosophy of “driving quality through technology and earning trust through quality,” successfully achieving a major strategic upgrade from precision mold manufacturing to the provision of PFA Teflon products and comprehensive solutions for precision structural components made of specialty engineering plastics.
In the mold manufacturing industry, plastic injection molds and silicone molds are two of the most widely used molding solutions. Although both serve the purpose of product replication in appearance, they differ fundamentally in material properties, structural design, and application scenarios. A systematic comparison is provided below from three dimensions.
I. Fundamental Differences in Material Properties
Silicone molds use specialized mold silicone as the base material, typically made by mixing silicone and epoxy curing agent in a specific ratio and then curing at room temperature or under heating conditions. Silicone is a thermosetting material with advantages such as heat resistance, corrosion resistance, high tear resistance, and high simulation accuracy. Due to the excellent fluidity of silicone, molds do not require a gating system, and their manufacturing cost is significantly lower than that of plastic injection molds, making them highly economical for small-batch, high-precision replication applications.
Plastic injection molds are combined mold assemblies used for compression, injection, blow molding, and foam molding; they are also known in the industry as injection molds or plastic molds. Plastics are also thermosetting materials, but they require injection molding to be formed. Plastic injection molds are often referred to as the “mother of industry,” and currently, the vast majority of new product development involves the manufacture of molds for plastic parts. It is worth noting that to improve the overall performance of plastic products, various auxiliary materials such as fillers, tackifiers, lubricants, thickeners, and stabilizers are usually added to the polymer.
II. Design Differences in Mold Structure
The material used for silicone molds is mold silicone, which typically consists of five components: base silicone, coupling agent, catalyst, filler, and preservative. In actual formulations, the base silicone, coupling agent, and filler are often combined into one component, while the catalyst is a separate component. This is the technical reason why mold silicone is classified as a two-component room temperature curing silicone.
The structure of plastic injection molds is more complex. Its core consists of two main systems: one is a variable die system composed of a die assembly base steel plate, die components, and a die assembly wooden chuck; the other is a deformable core system composed of a punch assembly base steel plate, punch components, a punch assembly wooden chuck, die disconnect components, and side section assembly plates. This multi-layered structural design is to meet the precise molding requirements of plastics under high temperature and high pressure environments.
III. Differences in the Positioning of Application Scenarios
Silicone raw materials can be divided into two main categories based on their chemical properties: solid silicone and liquid silicone. Solid silicone is mainly used for compression molding products, such as silicone sleeves, silicone kitchen utensils, silicone molds, and silicone buttons; while liquid silicone is mainly used for extrusion molding products, such as silicone nipples and silicone tubes.
The applications of plastic injection molded parts cover almost all areas of modern industry and daily life, including home appliances, instruments and equipment, wires and cables, construction machinery, electronic components, automotive parts, and daily hardware. It can be said that the application breadth of plastic injection molds far exceeds that of silicone molds, but silicone molds remain irreplaceable in the fields of high-precision replication and small-batch customization.
IV. Selection Recommendations
In practical projects, the selection of mold solutions should be based on three core judgments: product batch size, precision requirements, and material compatibility. For products with large batch sizes and complex structures, plastic injection molds are preferred; for small batches, high precision, and complex-shaped artworks or functional prototypes, silicone molds are more suitable. The two are not substitutes, but rather complements.
FAQ
Q: How much difference is there in cost between silicone molds and plastic injection molds?
A: Silicone molds do not require a gating system, and their manufacturing cost is typically only a fraction of that of plastic injection molds, making them particularly suitable for small-batch trial production. However, for mass production of tens of thousands or more pieces using plastic injection molds, the cost per unit decreases significantly, resulting in better overall economic efficiency.
Q: Can silicone molds be used for the trial production of plastic products?
A: Yes. Silicone molds are often used as verification molds before plastic injection molding for small-batch functional testing and appearance confirmation. Mass production is only initiated with steel molds after verification; this is a very mature development process in the industry.
Q: What are the service lives of the two types of molds respectively?
A: The lifespan of silicone molds is generally between several hundred and several thousand cycles, depending on the complexity of the product and the frequency of demolding. For plastic injection molds, aluminum molds typically last for about ten thousand to fifty thousand cycles, while steel molds can last for hundreds of thousands or even millions of cycles.
